TH, schwa, and long vowels: a survival guide

Three sounds that separate understandable English from English that really sounds native-like.

If your English sounds Spanish even when grammar is fine, the usual suspects are TH, schwa, and long vowels.

Direct answer

TH needs the tongue between the teeth. Schwa needs a reduced central vowel. Long vowels need duration and stability.

What to check first

Start with TH. Then practice AH and IY to hear the difference between a relaxed vowel and a long one.

Schwa is easy to ignore, but it shows up everywhere. If you do not control it, many words stop sounding natural.

How to train it

Work with short phrases first, then isolated words, and only then free production. Do not try to fix everything at once.

Closing note

With short practice and the right feedback, these three areas stop being blockers and start becoming a strength.
